Richard Schwartz began his career as a systemic family therapist and an academic. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to clients’ descriptions of various parts within themselves. He focused on the relationships among these parts and noticed that there were systemic patterns to the way they were organized across clients. He also found that when the clients’ parts felt safe and were allowed to relax, the clients would experience spontaneously the qualities of confidence, openness, and compassion that Dr. Schwartz came to call the Self. He found that when in that state of Self, clients would know how to heal their parts.

A featured speaker for national professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles about IFS.

If ever there was a conversation that links behavior to brain injury/brain health: this is it! Dr. Daniel Amen reminds us that we are fundamentally not bad people, we just have brains that need help. When we consider the men and women living in prison, we can see the obvious need to bring the brain healing techniques we discuss in this video. Better brains make better neighbors.

Dr. Daniel Amen’s mission is to end mental illness by creating a revolution in brain health. He is dedicated to providing the education, products, and services to accomplish this goal. Dr. Amen is a physician, adult and child psychiatrist, and founder of Amen Clinics with 11 locations across the U.S. Amen Clinics has the world’s largest database of brain scans for psychiatry totaling more than 225,000 SPECT scans on patients from 155 countries. He is the founder of BrainMD, a fast growing, science-based nutraceutical company, and Amen University, which has trained thousands of medical and mental health professionals on the methods he has developed.

Dr. Amen is a 12-time New York Times bestselling author, including Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, The End of Mental Illness, Healing ADD, and many more.

Byron Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than thirty years.

In 1986, at the bottom of a ten-year spiral into depression and self-loathing, Byron Katie woke up one morning in a state of joy. She realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Her simple yet powerful process of self-inquiry, which she calls The Work, consists of four questions and the turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe.

Her books include the bestselling Loving What Is now in a revised edition, I Need Your Love—Is That True?, A Thousand Names for Joy, and A Mind at Home with Itself. For more information, visit thework.com.

My conversation with Dr. Michael Gurian explores the neuroscience of a the brain of a male, the importance of having a male figure in the life of a growing boy, and other things to consider when guiding our sons through their youth.

Dr. Michael Gurian is a marriage and family counselor in private practice and the New York Times bestselling author of thirty two books published in twenty three languages. As a social philosopher, he has pioneered efforts to bring neuro-biology and brain research into homes, schools, corporations, and public policy. The Gurian Institute, which he co-founded, conducts research internationally, launches pilot programs, and trains professionals.

One of the world’s foremost gender experts, Michael travels extensively to provide keynotes and consulting. His engaging and dynamic presentation style, along with the use of case studies, visual aids such as PET and SPECT scans, and interactive demonstrations will help you better understand and assess the needs of both sexes and all genders, and most effectively intervene and work with children and adults from birth through adulthood.

Michael has spoken for the United Nations on violence against women; provided information on boys’ and girls’ educational needs to the White House; and briefed Members of the 114th Congress on the boy crisis in America. A number of Michael’s books have sparked national debate, including THE WONDER OF BOYS, THE WONDER OF GIRLS, BOYS AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY!, and LEADERSHIP AND THE SEXES.

James S. Gordon, MD, a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, is internationally recognized for using self-awareness, self-care, and group support to heal population-wide psychological trauma. He is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., a clinical professor at Georgetown Medical School, and was chairman (under Presidents Clinton and GW Bush) of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.

Dr. Gordon has also authored several books, including Transforming Trauma: The Path to Hope and Healing, Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven Stage Journey Out of Depression, Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to Healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies, and the award-winning Health for the Whole Person. Dr. Gordon’s latest book, Transforming Trauma, helps readers understand that they will all experience trauma at some point in their lives, and that trauma is a human experience rather than a pathological anomaly. Drawing on current scientific research and 50 years of his own clinical experience, Dr. Gordon demonstrates how people can meet the challenges trauma presents head on and discover that there is joy, meaning, and purpose to be found.

Dr. Vincent J Felitti, MD from Kaiser Permanente is the co-principal investigator, along with Robert F. Anda MD from the CDC, of the Adverse Childhood Experiences research study.

The ACE study changed the way we understand the impact and predisposing influence childhood trauma has on adult health issues. It helped bring to the forefront the realization that we aren’t bad people but, rather, bad things have happened to us which have subsequently impacted our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Dr. Felitti graduated from John Hopkins Medical School, starting his medical career as an infectious disease physician in 1968. Dr. Felitti founded the Department of Preventive Medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Diego and held the position of Chief of Preventive Medicine in 2001. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California and a Fellow at the American College of Physicians.

Originally filmed to be included in our Trauma Talks program, this conversation dives into the ACE Quiz as well as a discussion about the prevalence of childhood trauma in the trauma to prison pipeline. This conversation is included in Episode 2 of our series which is being implemented in several prisons and communities in the United States. It is our goal that we break the cycle of violence that exists in our prisons, our communities and our families.

Our first Returning Citizen Roundtable discussion about childhood trauma featuring Shaka Senghor, Jason Bryant, Eldra Jackson III and Robert Mosqueda.

Shaka Senghor entered prison in 1991 for committing second-degree murder. Today, he’s a best-selling author, lecturer at universities, and leading voice on criminal justice reform. During his 19 years incarcerated—including seven in solitary confinement—Shaka began a journey of self reflection, inspired by reading and writing as a means of understanding his past, his present, and his future potential. By embracing forgiveness, hope, and everything that’s possible when you refuse to be defined by your past, he’s become a leading voice on the potential inherent in us all when given support and a second chance. In the decade since his release, he’s written books, garnered awards and fellowships, lectured at universities, started and worked with nonprofits seeking to lift people up, visited the White House, been interviewed by Trevor Noah and Oprah Winfrey, given award-winning TED talks, featured in a song with Nas, and tirelessly worked to help create the personal and societal change we need for a more inspired, just, fulfilling future.

We recently interviewed Chris Wilson, author of “The Master Plan.” Chris is a visual artist, author, film producer and social justice advocate, and was serving a life sentence when he started writing “The Master Plan.” In his memoir, Chris writes about his journey from being incarcerated to becoming the successful entrepreneur he is today.

Chris Wilson is a living example of how discipline, self-determination and knowing your self worth can change everything: including getting yourself out of prison.

Chris splits his time between Baltimore, Maryland, and New York City. Through his work, he investigates societal injustices, human relationships, and public policies. His book, “The Master Plan,” continues to inspire people from all walks of life.

His artwork is collected and displayed internationally and his production company, Cuttlefish, has produced several successful films, including The Box, which was recently featured in the Tribeca Film Festival. He is also the founder of the Chris Wilson Foundation, which supports social entrepreneurs and prison education, including re-entry and financial literacy for returning citizens, as well as art-related programs.

April is Child Abuse Awareness month and I can’t think of a better guest than Dr. Gabor Maté to discuss what happens to a child when he faces abuse and neglect while growing up. This was one of my all-time favorite conversations. We discuss Authenticity vs. Attachment, why a young, traumatized person is attracted to gangs, what happens to a young brain when it’s traumatized and Dr. Maté answered questions sent in by men from prison.

About Dr. Gabor Maté

After 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, Dr. Gabor Maté worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. The bestselling author of four books published in over thirty languages, Gabor is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship of stress and illness.
His books include In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction; When the Body Says No; The Cost of Hidden Stress; Scattered Minds: The Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder; and (with Dr. Gordon Neufeld) Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. His next book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture is due out on September 13, 2022. Gabor is also co-developer of a therapeutic approach, Compassionate Inquiry, now studied by hundreds of therapists, physicians, counselors, and others internationally.

This short, 15-minute conversation between our founder, Fritzi Horstman and Dr. Kim Gorgens informs about the unique effects of Traumatic Brain Injury as it applies to the 50 to 80% of those residing in prisons in the U.S., how it effects our behavior and we also learn what Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor is!

Dr. Kim Gorgens is a Professor of Psychophysiology, Clinical Neuropsychology and Psychology of Criminal Behavior at the University of Denver. She manages a large portfolio of traumatic brain injury (TBI) related research and has lectured extensively on those issues (including a 2010 TED talk on youth sports concussion, a 2018 TED talk on brain injuries in criminal justice, several NPR spots and an interview on CNN with Anderson Cooper). Her work has been featured in USNews, Newsweek, Salon.com and more. Her research studies the reported injury history, cognitive function and brain biomarkers of youth and college athletes, probationers and inmates. Her mission is to better understand the short and long-term impacts of injuring our most vital organ.

Mark Moskowitz had a 28-year career in finance including a time owning his own hedge fund. During a spiral in his life, Mark found himself pleading guilty to wire fraud for taking $700,000 of the funds assets. He was sentenced to 33 months and went to Otisville Federal Prison. It was there that he learned about his trauma as a child that led to a life of low self-esteem and poor decision making.

Since his release in 2019 Mark has dedicated himself to teaching the principles he learned while incarcerated. He is a speaker, coach, CPP volunteer and will be releasing his first book in the Spring of 2022. Click here to pre-order Mark’s book, Within: How I Found My Authentic and Happy Self in a Federal Prison.

This conversation, with the director and two principle participants in the making of the award-winning film “The Prison Within”, touches upon taking responsibility for our own violence, our accountability as a society and how we get down to doing the work necessary to heal the past both individually and collectively.
Katherin Hervey is an award-winning filmmaker whose work focuses on those of us who live in the margins but refuse to be marginalized.
Dr. Christine Montross is a 2015 Guggenheim fellow in nonfiction. She’s also an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Montross’ latest book, Waiting for an Echo, was named a New York Times Book to Watch For, a TIME magazine Book to Read in July, and an Amazon.com Best Book of the Month. Waiting for an Echo is a hauntingly honest look into the life of a person living in an American prison where Dr. Montross writes, “Our methods of incarceration take away not only freedom, but also selfhood and soundness of mind. In a nation where ninety-five percent of all inmates are released from prison and return to our communities, this is a practice that punishes us all.”

Dr. Montross is currently a practicing in-patient psychiatrist and performs forensic psychiatric examinations. She completed medical school and residency training at Brown University, where she received the Isaac Ray Award in Psychiatry and the Martin B. Keller Outstanding Brown Psychiatry Resident Award.

In this podcast, Dr. Montross discusses her vast experience and research leading up to Waiting for an Echo and breaks down very plainly the detrimental effect of solitary confinement on a person’s health and wellbeing.
